What is Read Write Inc?
At Lightmoor we follow the the Read, Write Inc Programmes to teach children to read. Read Write Inc. is a lively and vigorous synthetic phonics programme that teaches children to read and write quickly and embeds basic phonic skills. It has proved to be very successful in our school with both the children and the staff and last year’s Year 1 phonics results and end of Key Stage 1 results were testimony to this.
The children learn the 44 common sounds in the English language and how to sound blend for reading (decoding) at the same time as developing handwriting skills and spelling (encoding). Crucially, they read lively storybooks and non-fiction books with words they can decode, so they achieve early success in reading. As the children are taught to decode and encode, they are also taught to comprehend and to compose out loud. The quicker their encoding the more able they are to write what they have composed.
All staff have been fully trained in the effective delivery of Read Write Inc. The sessions are Monday to Thursday for one hour each day (20 minutes in Reception). The children are grouped according to their reading level across their key stage. Children are assessed every six weeks and new groups are formed on the basis of these assessments.
Alongside Read Write Inc, guided and individual reading takes place at least once weekly for each child in Key Stage 1. Progress in reading is shared with parents and carers through pupils’ ‘Reading Records’, where they are encouraged to record pupils’ efforts and achievements at home. A ‘Sound and Word Book’ accompanies reading books where needed and promotes parent and carers’ involvement in the development of pupils’ communication and language skills. Their observations of achievements at home are welcomed in school, and form part of the on-going tracking of pupils’ development.
Children in Key Stage 2 who still need support with reading will be involved in Read Write Inc and may have extra 1:1 Read Write Inc interventions daily in the afternoons. All children in Key stage 2 will have a weekly guided read and although we follow the Rigby Star Reading Scheme as a school they will be encouraged to read a range of materials at home.
