SEND
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities at Lightmoor Village Primary School
At Lightmoor Village Primary School, inclusion sits at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of need, is fully included in school life and has access to an ambitious curriculum. We believe that every teacher is a teacher of SEND and that all pupils, with or without additional needs, deserve high quality teaching, appropriate support and the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
We recognise that children learn and develop in different ways. Our teachers and teaching assistants adapt teaching styles, use a range of resources and carefully plan different levels of work to meet the needs of all learners. However, we understand that some pupils may require additional support at certain points in their school journey.
Our SEND Vision
• Every child feels valued, safe and included
• Barriers to learning are identified early and removed
• Provision is tailored to individual strengths and needs
• Parents and carers are partners in decision making
• Pupils are supported to prepare successfully for adulthood
Inclusion is a shared responsibility across the whole school community.
"Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are supported well. If any pupils find it hard to cope in lessons or outside, they can find a calm retreat in the school’s nurture room. Here, they receive quality support and peaceful activities away from the hustle and bustle of the busy school day." - Ofsted June 2022
The Four Areas of SEND
In line with the SEND Code of Practice 2015, we recognise four broad areas of need:

Communication and Interaction
This includes pupils who experience difficulties with speech, language and communication, including Autism Spectrum Condition. Pupils may find it challenging to understand language or communicate effectively and appropriately with others.
Cognition and Learning
This includes pupils who learn at a slower pace than their peers. They may experience difficulty understanding parts of the curriculum, challenges with organisation and memory, or specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia or dyscalculia.
Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties
Some pupils may experience difficulties managing emotions or relationships. This can include anxiety, attention difficulties, attachment needs or other mental health challenges that impact learning and wellbeing.
Sensory and Physical Needs
This includes pupils with visual or hearing impairments, physical disabilities or sensory processing differences who may require specialist equipment or ongoing support.
Some pupils may experience needs across more than one area. We identify a primary area of need while recognising the full profile of the child.
How We Identify SEND
All pupils are entitled to quality first teaching. The first step in identifying SEND is through high quality classroom practice, appropriate differentiation and ongoing assessment.
Where concerns arise, we follow the graduated approach:
Assess
Plan
Do
Review
This cyclical process ensures that provision is responsive and tailored to the individual pupil. Regular assessments inform next steps and adjustments to support. We work closely with parents and carers throughout this process and value their insights into their child’s strengths and needs.
How We Support Pupils with SEND
At Lightmoor, we use a whole school provision map which outlines the support available at different levels of need.
Support may include:
• Adapted classroom teaching
• Targeted small group interventions
• Specialist programmes delivered by trained staff
• Social and emotional support
• Sensory adjustments and resources
• Individual timetables where appropriate
Our teaching assistants are highly skilled and work alongside class teachers to deliver effective interventions and personalised support.
Where required, we work in partnership with external professionals including educational psychologists, occupational therapists and social, emotional and mental health specialists.
PINS Project
Lightmoor Village Primary School is proud to be part of the Partnerships for Inclusion of Neurodiversity in Schools project. Through the PINS project, we are strengthening our whole school SEND provision, developing staff expertise and enhancing collaboration with parents and carers. We have benefited from specialist support including occupational therapists and social, emotional and mental health professionals who have carried out audits, delivered training and provided coaching to staff.
This project supports our commitment to inclusive practice and ensures we continue to improve outcomes for pupils with neurodiverse profiles.
